Q Sections: 1. Introduction (1/2 page). Provide an overview of your paper including the main points you will discuss and the usefulness of looking at a jury as a discussion group. (10 pts) 2. Setting (1-1 ½ pages). Mention the make-up of the jury, its instructions, and the meeting room. The film was made in the 1950s – in what ways does that make it any less relevant today? What about the make-up of the jury – how was/is it typical as far as gender, ethnicity, age, personal characteristics, etc.? (10 pts) 3. Task (1 -1 ½ pages): Precisely what was the task? Discuss this in terms of what you have learned from COM 341. Tie in some relevant concepts. How did the different jurors understand the task and how did this impact their decision making? (10 pts) 4. Process (1 ½-2 pages). Explain and give your opinions on what happened. How did the discussion proceed and did most of the participants agree on how to proceed? Did everyone participate to the same degree? How did some of the participants exhibit roles that facilitated or interfered with group effectiveness? As the discussion went on, what points seemed to have an impact on how jurors seemed to hold their views? There were some definite changes in opinions among the participants as the discussion continued; what seemed to lead to these changes? (25 pts) 5. Lessons (1-1 ½ pages). Seeing how the film portrayed the trial by jury system and knowing what you now know about group decision making, do you believe groups are good at determining guilt or innocence? What are their strengths and weaknesses? Can zero history groups make good decisions as called for in reaching a verdict in a trial? Why/why not? How do the instructions juries receive clearer instructions on how they should discuss a case and rules for conducting the discussion? (20 pts) 6. Conclusion (1/2 page). Provide a summary and mention the most important points in your analysis.
